OLYMPIA The Washington State Redistricting Commission will hold
a special meeting New Years Day to consider the latest revision
of a congressional district plan. Earlier in the month, the Redistricting
Commissions voting members approved a legislative district proposal,
but did not reach consensus on a congressional plan for the states
2002 political boundaries.

Tuesdays meeting will be the fifth special meeting of the bipartisan
commission since early November. Three of the commissions four voting
members must agree on a final congressional plan before it is submitted
to the Legislature. (The Legislature received the commissions legislative
proposal December 16.) As is true with the legislative plan, legislators
may only make minor changes to the congressional proposal. Any amendments,
if proposed, must be approved by a two-thirds majority of both the House
and the Senate, and passed within the first 30 days of the 2002 legislative
session.
