Redistricting Commission convenes New Year’s Day special meeting

WHO: Washington State Redistricting Commission
WHAT: Revised congressional district draft plan
WHEN: January 1, 2002 – 4:00 p.m.
WHERE: 505 East Union Avenue, Suite 350, Olympia, Washington

OLYMPIA — The Washington State Redistricting Commission will hold a special meeting New Year’s Day to consider the latest revision of a congressional district plan. Earlier in the month, the Redistricting Commission’s voting members approved a legislative district proposal, but did not reach consensus on a congressional plan for the state’s 2002 political boundaries.

Tuesday’s meeting will be the fifth special meeting of the bipartisan commission since early November. Three of the commission’s four voting members must agree on a final congressional plan before it is submitted to the Legislature. (The Legislature received the commission’s legislative proposal December 16.) As is true with the legislative plan, legislators may only make minor changes to the congressional proposal. Any amendments, if proposed, must be approved by a two-thirds majority of both the House and the Senate, and passed within the first 30 days of the 2002 legislative session.

The Washington State Redistricting Commission is a bipartisan agency of five commissioners established to redraw legislative and congressional district boundaries every 10 years. When redistricting is completed, the commission will close its doors. In 2011, a new commission will be appointed to ensure that Washington residents are fairly represented in Congress and the Washington.
