WHAT: Regular Monthly Meeting

OLYMPIA — The Washington State Redistricting Commission will devote its Dec. 6 business meeting to reviewing the latest revisions of legislative and congressional district plans.

Since early November, the five-member Redistricting Commission has held three special meetings in an effort to negotiate a single plan for Washington’s 2002 political boundaries. Three of the commission’s four voting members must agree on a final plan before it’s due to the Legislature on Dec. 15. At that point, legislators may only make minor changes to the redistricting plan. Any proposed amendments must be approved by a two-thirds majority of both the House and the Senate, and be passed within the first 30 days of the 2002 legislative session. Neither the Governor nor the Legislature can reject the commission’s plan.

The Washington State Redistricting Commission is a bipartisan agency of five commissioners established to redraw legislative and congressional district boundaries every 10 years. When redistricting is completed, the commission will close its doors. In 2011, a new commission will be appointed to ensure that Washington residents are fairly represented in Congress and the Washington.
