Redistricting Commission holds special meeting in Olympia

WHO: Washington State Redistricting Commission
WHAT: Special Commission Meeting
WHEN: Monday, November 19, 2001, 1:00 p.m.
WHERE: 505 East Union Avenue, Suite 350, Olympia, Wash.

OLYMPIA — The Redistricting Commission will hold a special meeting, Monday, Nov. 19 in Olympia. Commissioners will share the latest revisions to their draft plans, acknowledge newly received third party plans, discuss data standards and draft resolution language, and consider a follow up meeting date.

Monday’s meeting is the second meeting convened for the purpose of negotiating a single proposal that delineates Washington’s 2002 political boundaries. In order to meet a Dec. 15 deadline, the date the plan is due to the Legislature, commissioners must work diligently to meld four partisan plans into one bipartisan plan that adheres to strict legal criteria. Three of the four voting members must approve a final proposal before it’s sent to the Legislature.

The Washington State Redistricting Commission is a bipartisan agency of five commissioners established to redraw legislative and congressional district boundaries every 10 years. When redistricting is completed, the commission will close its doors. In 2011, a new commission will be appointed to ensure that Washington residents are fairly represented in Congress and the Washington.
