OLYMPIA The Redistricting Commission will hold a regular meeting,
Thursday, Nov. 1 in Olympia. Commissioners will review new third-party
plans that propose 2002 district boundary changes, and refine the redistricting
timeline through years end.

Earlier this month, the five-member commission completed a second round
of public hearings where more than 340 people attended. In all, about
120 people testified on draft plans proposing new election boundaries
for the state's 49 legislative and nine congressional districts. In addition
to in-person comments received in Seattle, Spokane and Centralia, commissioners
have received more than 300 written comments to date.

The official (administrative) public comment period ends today and marks
the start of commissioner negotiations. The commission plans to continue
to accept written comments, but those received by Oct. 30 will be given
full consideration. Over the next six weeks the commissioners will work
diligently to craft a single legislative and congressional plan. Three
of the four voting member must approve a final proposal that is due to
the Legislature by Dec.15.
