OLYMPIA — The Redistricting Commission will hold what will likely be its final meeting via conference call. At Thursday’s meeting, commissioners will discuss recent activities and final preparations related to the closing of the agency. Anyone interested in attending may participate via speakerphone at the Commission offices in Olympia.

On Dec. 16, the Redistricting Commission’s voting members unanimously approved a legislative district plan. On Jan. 1, the bipartisan panel agreed on the 2002 electoral boundaries for congressional districts. On Feb. 8, two days after similar approval in the Senate, the House unanimously passed two concurrent resolutions amending the redistricting map for six of Washington’s newly proposed legislative districts. The new districts will take effect with the fall elections. Maps of the districts are now available from the Commission, County Auditors and the Secretary of State.

At the end of June, the commission will close its doors. “This month marks the end of an eventful, participatory and productive term,” said Ethan Moreno, executive director of the Washington State Redistricting Commission. In 2011, a new commission will be appointed to ensure that Washington residents are fairly represented in Congress and the state legislature.
